I've always found peace while being next to the ocean. Growing up going on vacations to Ocean City, Maryland, I spent a lot of time in the ocean. That is why when I had some Delta credits to burn, I decided to make a quick 36 hour trip south to the ocean to decompress and contemplate the end of year.
My favorite band, Thrice, produced a series of albums called The Alchemy Index that had a concept around the four elements of Fire, Water, Air, Earth. The Water album has been one of my favorites, and I certainly made the effort to dust it off during the weekly challenge for some inspiration. As I sat on the beach, there were countless cargo ships waiting to enter the harbor to load up and set sail for their destination across the sea. The final track of the Water album, Kings Upon the Main has some lyrics that inspired my capture of a lone ship.
Despite the best of maps and the bravest men
For all their mighty names and massive forms
There'll never be and has never been
A ship or fleet secure against the storms
- "Kings Upon the Main" by Thrice
This made me think about some of the crazy clips you see floating around online of these massive ships in less-than-ideal waters. The people that work on these ships are brave souls that go against whatever nature throws at them while at sea. Just an interesting thought as I sat content on the beach listening to the crash of the waves.
